Just like with fashion and home design, each new year sees a series of new wedding trends. These trends influence every element of your big day from your attire to your centerpieces to your guests overall experience.

Often times trends will carry over from one year to the next, but sometimes we see completely fresh ideas. Overall, intimate weddings are becoming more popular with an increased focus on creating a unique design full of your personal details.

While there are many trends that will make for beautiful weddings this year, my favorites include...

Mixed and Matte Metallics - We’ve been seeing metallics for years. But this year, we’ll see them really take center stage. Instead of choosing colors with a metallic accent, there will be a heavier focus on mixing metallics like bronze, rose gold and silver throughout the wedding with traditional color options taking a back seat.

Specialty Single Bars - Forget the signature cocktail and opt for a specialty bar instead. Choose your favorite libation like bourbon, rum, vodka or champagne and have a single bar dedicated to it. Stock it with unique and small batch producers for a one-of-a-kind set-up.

Jewel Tones - Soft neutrals have reigned supreme for the last few years. However, this year we’ll see a resurgence richer jewel tones. More and more couples are wanting to make an impact with their wedding decor and jewel tones are a great way to do that.

Velvet - Texture is huge this year. Adding velvet accents will give your wedding a luxe feel without being too stiff. I even love the idea of jewel toned velvet making an impactful statement in wedding decor.

Destination Weddings - With friends and family spread across the country and world, destination weddings are gaining popularity. We’re seeing more intimate groups travel to dream destinations, renting out boutique hotels and villas to create an authentic, one-of-a-kind experience for all. (If you want to learn more about having a destination wedding, visit our sister company, Wanderlust Design Co.)

Installations and Backdrops - Over the last year, we’ve seen a resurgence of truly custom events with couples wanting their day to feel personal and special. Installations and backdrops are the ideal way to take an ordinary space and make it feel like you.

Hand Lettering and Calligraphy Details Throughout - It used to be that a calligrapher was hired for your invitations only. However, we’re seeing more and more hand lettered and calligraphy details pop up throughout a wedding from table numbers to menus and even on installation and backdrops.

If you want to learn more about these and other wedding trends for 2018, I encourage you to check the International Wedding Trend Report. It has predictions and inspiration from the industries top professionals including myself (pages 115 & 117).

I’m excited to see these trends come to life this year and help you incorporate them into your overall wedding design!
