Getting engaged is one of the most exciting times in your life. You’ve found someone you love endlessly and want to spend the rest of your life with. When the big moment comes, you’re overjoyed and excited to start this new chapter.

However, about 30 seconds after you say “Yes!”, the questions start flowing. How did it happen? When’s the wedding? Do you know where you want to get married yet? The list could go on and on. With friends and family asking all of these questions from the beginning, it’s easy to get overwhelmed before the planning even starts.

Before you dive into planning your big day though, you’ll want to do these five things first….

#1 - Insure Your Ring: Your engagement ring is an important and special piece of jewelry. You would be beside yourself if something ever happened to it. Before you handle any other planning task, you’ll want to make sure your ring is insured. Your fiancé may have taken care of it before the proposal but if not, tackle this first thing.

#2 - Celebrate and Take a Minute to Soak It In: It’s time to pop the champagne and celebrate! It’s an exciting time in your lives and you should enjoy every moment of it. Once you start planning, it’s going to feel like a whirlwind and next thing you know you’ll be walking down the aisle. Take some time to bask in the excitement instead of planning the day after you say “Yes!”

#3 - Discuss a Budget with Your Family and Fiancé(e): Once you’ve had some time to celebrate, discuss a budget with your family and fiancé(e). Figure out who is able to contribute and how much you’ll have to plan the biggest party of your life.

#4 - Select a Desired Wedding Date Range: Your actual date will be influenced by a number of factors, namely the availability of your preferred venue. However, it’s always best to start planning with a desired date range in mind. It will give you some guidance when looking at spaces and talking to potential vendors.

#5 - Hire a Wedding Planner: Having a professional by your side throughout the process is invaluable and it’s best to bring one in at the very beginning. If you’re not sure if a wedding planner is the right choice for you, you can read our post “Do I Need a Wedding Planner?” to help you figure it out.

Once you’ve tackled these five things, you’ll be ready to handle every task ahead. It may seem overwhelming at times but always remember to have fun and enjoy every minute because wedding day will be here before you know it!
